Beach

One kilometre to the south is an open 1 km wide east-facing embayment largely filled with 100 ha Nadgee Lake. On the northern side of the bay is beach NSW 720N, a 200 m long pocket of sand wedged in between rock platforms and backing 15 m high bluffs. Waves average over 1 m and maintain a permanent rip against the southern rocks. The main Nadgee Lake beach (NSW 720) commences 150 m to the south and curves for 900 m to the southern rocks, and blocks the backing lake (Fig. 4.439). Twenty metre high heath covered headlands border the lake and beach. A rarely used 4WD track terminates on the northern headland, the southernmost vehicle track on the NSW coast. A low foredune backs the northern half, with the usually blocked lake entrance behind the southern half. It receives waves averaging 1-1.5 m and usually has a single bar, often detached from the beach and cut by 5-6 rips, including permanent rips against the headlands. A straight section of rocky coast runs south of Nadgee Lake with two small boulder beaches located 1.5 and 2 km south of the lake.

General

To the south of Newtons Beach is 17 km of predominantly resilient red rocky shore that trends south to the Victorian border at Cape Howe, where the coast turns to the southwest. In between are six sandy beaches all located at the mouth of small creeks. The entire section is located within Nadgee Nature Reserve with restricted access to these little visited beaches. The northern 5 km are backed by slopes rising to 300 m, while to the south lower coastal heath and Impressa, Nadgee and Endeavour moors back the shore.
