Soldiers Point is a 10 m high northerly protruding headland that together with the northern Fome Point divides the eastern and western sections of Port Stephens. Extending east of the point is the open north-facing Salamander Bay, with five beaches (PS 4-8) located between the point and Corlette Point in the east. The westernmost beach located 11 km inside the bay, is Soldiers Point (PS 4) an east facing 630 m long 5 m wide strip of high tide sand that extends south of the tip of point. It is fronted by shallow seagrass flats and backed by beachfront houses, with access restricted to the northern end, where there is a small groyne across the beach. Beach PS 5 is a southern extension of Soldiers Point beach and consists of a curving north-facing 300 m long narrow strip of high tide sand, which terminates in lee of Kangaroo Point. It is backed by beachfront houses with no direct public access.
