Beach

The bluffs terminate at the beginning of beach NT 384. A vehicle track runs out to the top of the bluffs overlooking the 3.9 km long beach, with two houses located on the edge of the bluffs and a third down behind the northern end of the beach. The beach represents the net result of 6000 years of sediment movement down into Raffles Bay, past the bluffs and its deposition (perhaps during occasional tropical cyclone events) as a series of multiple recurved spits. The spits have built the shoreline up to 1 km into the bay as well as growing 3.9 km to the south, in total a 200 ha system, backed by a largely blocked 150 ha drowned valley. The beach faces east and is fronted by sand flats that widen from 200 m in the north to 600 m in the south off the mouth of the tidal creek which drains the backing lagoon.
