Beach

Beach NT 1410 begins on the south side of the rocks and trends generally southwest for 5.1 km to a rock-controlled inflection in the shore. The entire beach is fronted by shallow coral reef flats averaging 1 km in width, which lower waves at the shore to less than 0.5 m at high tide. The 5 ha Aryillarlarg Billabong, together with several other wetlands, backs the northern end of the beach. Between the wetlands and the shore is a 0.5-1 km wide series of possibly Pleistocene, then onlapping Holocene beach ridges, including some minor dune transgression. It is possible this and some of the adjoining barrier systems were more active during the mid-Holocene following the sea level stillstand. At this time the present reef flats were deeper or non-existent permitting higher waves to reach the shore and possibly produced the more active dune systems. Subsequent shoaling by the reefs decreased wave height and consequently beach and dune type.
