Beach

The north-east corner of Magnetic Island consists of granite hills rising nearly 200 m and a number of small bays and embayed beaches. The first five bays house four sandy beaches; Balding, Radical, Florence and Arthur Bays, while Balding, Radical and Florence Bays are also marine parks.

Radical Bay (MT2) lies immediately east of Balding Bay; it also faces north and is a more open, 250 m wide bay with prominent granite headlands. A road leads to the bay where there are a few houses and a small car park, but no facilities. The beach has a low to moderate gradient and varies in width from 20 m at high tide to up to 50 m at low tide.

Swimming

Waves usually average less than 0.5 m at all four bays and swimming is relatively safe under these conditions. Just watch for the shallow coral reefs and the rocks adjacent to the headlands.

Surfing

Usually too small to worry about, with Florence and Arthur receiving slightly higher waves when the Trades are blowing; Florence is the best during strong south-easterlies.

Fishing

All four bays offer excellent opportunities for beach and rock fishing. Certain restrictions apply in the marine parks.

General

Four small but beautiful bays surrounded by steep, pine-covered, granite headlands and hills, together with clean, low energy, sandy beaches and some coral reefs.

Carpark

Type: Formal parking area
Spaces: 20
