Beach

The main section of Arthur Beach (T 896) commences on the north side of the rocks whose reefs continue for another 500 m offshore, while Bottle Creek crosses the beach 300 m north of the rocks. Once past the small creek mouth the beach continues north for a total of 4.5 km as an open exposed sandy beach and wide surf zone. Waves average 3 m and break across a three bar 400-500 m wide surf. The inner bar is dominated by usually eight large rips, with more widely spaced rips along the second bar, while the third bar only breaks during higher seas. The strong westerly winds have blown sand inland to form a series of transgressive dunes which widen to 3.5 km in the north, rising as high as 65 m. Drainage is deflected down the dune ridges with Tiger and Alert creeks crossing the central section of the beach. The beach is open for use by recreational vehicles with access points at each end as well as two central tracks across the dunes, while the Temma Road runs across the inner edge of the dunes.
