Beach

The Armstrong Bay-Levy Point Beach is a 7.6 km long, south-west facing beach that extends from the calcarenite cliffs west of Thunder Point to the mouth of Kelly Swamp at The Cutting. The beach is backed by 20 to 30 m high active dunes, with the low Kelly Swamp behind. The swamp drains both to the east through the Merri River, and to the west by way of The Cutting. There is access to the beach in the east by a car park and a 300 m long walk over the dunes, and in the west at The Cutting car park. For the most part it is only accessible along the beach on foot.

The beach receives waves averaging over 1.5 m, which combine with the finer sand to break over a 400 m wide surf zone. This contains an inner detached bar with strong rips every 500 m, and an outer bar with more widely spaced rips.

Swimming

A hazardous beach and surf dominated by usually high waves and a deep longshore trough containing strong longshore and rip currents.

Surfing

Fishing

There are usually good rip holes and gutters that can be fished from the beach.

General

An exposed, high energy beach and active dune field that is only suitable for experienced surfers and beach fishers.
