Beach name: Kalbarri (N)
General Beach Hazard Rating: 2

Beach

Beach WA 1134 is located directly opposite the main beach on the northern side of the tidal channel in lee of the northern beachrock reef. This beach is even more sheltered than the main beach with low waves only reaching the beach at high tide. The reef and beach link at the northern end to form a shallow, narrowing ‘lagoon’, while the southern end borders the deep tidal channel with its strong currents. It is backed by a low unstable dune-covered section of the tidal delta, with no direct access from Kalbarri, other than by boat.

Swimming

The Kalbarri spit is the least hazardous beach in the area and is patrolled, however even here care must be taken to avoid the tidal current in the deeper tidal channel, which runs just off spit. The ocean beaches are hazardous owing to the usually higher swell and numerous rocks, reefs and strong rips. They are only suitable for swimming when calm, with the best being at Red Bluff and Nancy Beach.

Surfing

Kalbarri is famous for its surf and many Perth based surfers are prepared to drive the 600 km for a weekend of surf. The main spot is the left on Jacques Point, called Jakes. It is a lefthander breaking over reef, which can be surfed to 5 m. There is also a left at Red Bluff, inner reef/beach breaks at Red Bluff beach, and reef breaks at the car parks along Jakes and Blue Holes beaches.
