Sunshine Beach forms the northern end of a 15 km long beach that runs almost due south to Sunrise, Marcus and Peregian Beaches and on to Coolum Beach at the southern end. Surf lifesaving clubs are located at Sunshine (Fig. 4.108), Peregian and Coolum, with lifeguards also patrolling Sunrise Beach. The beach is bordered by Noosa Head and Lion Rock in the north, and runs uninterrupted to Point Perry in the south. It faces essentially due east and receives waves averaging 1.5 m. The waves and fine sand produce an energetic double bar system. The inner bar is usually attached to the beach, but cut by deep rip channels every 200 to 250 m. Beyond this is a deep longshore trough, then further out the outer bar, which is cut by large rips every few hundred metres. On average there are 60 rips operating along the entire length of the beach (Fig. 2.6a), together with strong permanent rips at the north end against Lion Rock and in the south against Point Perry.
Beach Length: 0.015km
